Group B Strep Test
There is so much information out there on Group B Strep (GBS), but everything that I could possibly want to tell you is included in this beautiful article by Aviva Romm. It’s linked below and I just really like it.
I strongly encourage you to read through information about GBS because for those mamas who are trying to avoid an IV, it’s important to know that if you are tested positive, your care provider will want to give you an IV of antibiotics. For birthing people who are trying to avoid an epidural because they want to walk around, be free to go in the shower, avoid feeling ‘stuck’, GBS will most likely force you to adjust your vision a little bit. No, you are not permanently tied to the IV for the entire birth, but there will be a time period every three or four hours or so that you will need to get the next dose of antibiotics.
The article by Aviva Romm goes over natural ways that you can help to adjust your flora so that you are more likely to test negative, but know that (unfortunately) nothing is guaranteed.
I’ve also included a link below that includes an amazing guide of GBS by our incredible midwives here in Ontario, plus two more links with evidence-based information all about GBS.
