Newborn 101 Class
Besides childbirth education classes, some families choose to also take supplementary classes such as infant and child CPR, breastfeeding workshops, ‘the first 40 days’ type workshop or newborn 101 classes.
At the time of recording this video, I’m currently teaching the Newborn 101 Class at WEM and it is totally one of my favourite parts of my job… I get a room full of 8-10 expecting couples and we go over what the heck newborns look like and why, what newborn sleep schedules are really all about, poop colours, nursery must-haves and have-nots, and things like swaddling and bathing techniques.. I basically have three hours of time to spew out as much relevant and important information as I possibly can and answer questions, but please know that a lot of that information is available to you here through these videos too.
However, that doesn’t mean that taking a newborn 101 class wouldn’t be beneficial! The questions that other parents ask are often a. totally great because everyone else in the class has the same question, b. gives everyone a chance to answer the question so we can all see the wide range of styles/opinions that are out there so you can be very clear that while in the doctor’s office, forums, mom groups, playground, wherever you are that everyone is coming at this parenting thing from a different angle and they aren’t right and they aren’t wrong, they’re just themselves.
If you or your partner have very limited experience with newborns, don’t really find books to be useful and would rather learn in a class environment then I’d highly recommend taking the class. I’ve linked to a couple different classes in different areas other than the one I teach because I do think it can be really great to have a large support system; whoever else is teaching the Newborn 101 class is absolutely equipped and qualified to do so and are another point of support in this amazing birth journey so take advantage of it. That being said, I’d for sure love to spend the afternoon with you at West End Mamas if you’d like to join me.
I’m going to work on getting some of the activities that I use for the Newborn 101 class up here too, so keep your eyes peeled for that and you’ll either see it updated below when it’s ready or I’ll send out an email/notification that the new content is ready.
