Postpartum + Overnight Doula
Postpartum and overnight doulas are wonderful people, and just like birth doulas, different postpartum doulas have different styles.
I wouldn’t say I’m the best ‘motherly’ postpartum doula in the entire world because I’m not overly helpful in the kitchen, and I’m not the best cleaner and I don’t always know how much detergent to put in the washing machine, but I am of course an incredible baby-whisperer postpartum doula. However, I think it’s important for you to know that there are some postpartum doulas who are really great after birth to help get all things home in order and with motherly and aunty type things. They know exactly how to cook really nutritious, beautiful meals and they are able to alleviate some of the stresses of housecare that are now impossible to get to with baby around. When I come over for my visits, we often spend a lot of our time talking about breastfeeding, or babywearing, scheduling, bathing -- more babycare related topics and I am great at caring for your baby while you make calls, take a shower, lie down and rest. If you are looking for postpartum support outside of what I do, like unloading the dishwasher or sterilizing pump or bottle pieces or folding laundry, please know that there are lots of AMAZING people out there. I particularly trust The Nesting Place and the Discover Birth team because I’ve worked with them and I know a lot of their doulas, and they practice and hold themselves to an incredibly high standard.
Now, with overnight doulas they’re not doing as much housework because they come into your home from 10pm to 6am and care for your baby while you rest, so ideally they’re not clanging around in the kitchen or vacuuming. I often do overnight work with families I’ve supported through birth and it is one of my FAVOURITE parts of this work. Whether the baby is breastfed or bottlefed, baby is handed over duly at 10:00pm and baby is fed when they begin to cue. I either wake the nurser up to feed or just give a bottle of whatever kind of milk the family is using -- breast, donor or formula. I am responsible for soothing the baby, changing the baby, getting that baby to sleep and loving them up all night. It is so magical and keeps me SO HUMBLE as a doula because I can slightly relate to the exhaustion, magic, frustration, and fulfillment that can come from caring for something so small, so delicate, so beautiful, so perfect.
Overnight doulas usually charge around $320-350 a night, and postpartum hourly rates are anywhere between 35-50$ an hour depending on the doula and how large of a package you buy.
Just know these supports are available to you and if you feel like you want them or need them, let me know and I’m happy to help make it happen.
